A Reflection
The Culture Code: Building a Foundation for Asociados Médicos in Puerto Rico
In The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle explores what makes successful teams thrive: building safety, sharing vulnerability, and establishing a shared purpose. These principles extend beyond the workplace. They offer valuable lessons for asociados médicos and our efforts to strengthen our recognition and inclusion in Puerto Rico.
Belonging creates the foundation for collaboration. Coyle emphasizes the importance of creating environments where people feel valued, respected, and included. For asociados médicos, this means fostering meaningful relationships with physicians, healthcare leaders, policymakers, and the communities we serve, even as we navigate geographic barriers and build a grassroots movement to establish greater recognition of our profession. Our inclusion in Puerto Rico’s healthcare system should begin with recognizing the education, clinical training, and contributions that asociados médicos bring to patient care. Through AAMPR, our voices unite to advance recognition for asociados médicos while building camaraderie and celebrating our profession at events like AAPA conferences and the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City.
Trust grows through communication, collaboration, and shared vulnerability. Building trust requires consistent dialogue, mutual respect, and a willingness to understand different perspectives. As AAMPR continues advocating for the recognition of asociados médicos in Puerto Rico, we must engage stakeholders, address misconceptions about our profession, and demonstrate how asociados médicos can complement existing healthcare teams. Coyle emphasizes that success comes not just from our individual skills, but from combining those skills into a greater collective intelligence through trusting cooperation. This requires being vulnerable together: acknowledging what we do not know, asking for help, and listening with a willingness to learn from one another. Advocacy involves discovery too. It is about building relationships through shared vulnerability that sparks cooperation and trust, making meaningful progress possible.
A shared purpose brings people together. Coyle reminds us that strong cultures are built around a common mission. For AAMPR, that mission extends beyond professional recognition. It includes improving access to healthcare, supporting our communities, and contributing to a stronger healthcare system for Puerto Rico. When we communicate this shared purpose, our advocacy becomes an invitation to collaborate toward better patient outcomes.
Final Reflections
The path toward greater recognition and inclusion will require persistence, unity, and collective effort. As asociados médicos, we must continue strengthening our professional community while building bridges with those who share our commitment to healthcare. Our future in Puerto Rico will depend not only on the recognition we seek, but also on the relationships, trust, and shared purpose we build and nurture within our organization and the communities we serve.
