An Interview
This issue, we spotlight Mia Thatcher, PA-C, a recent graduate of Ohio Dominican University, Class of 2024. Mia is beginning her journey as a practicing PA and currently completing the OhioHealth APP Fellowship, preparing her for the next exciting chapter in her career.
Mia comes from a proud Puerto Rican family with deep roots in healthcare, where the spirit of service has been passed down through generations. During PA school, she served as an AAPA Student Delegate (2023–2025) and participated in a medical mission trip to Honduras, experiences that reflect her dedication to leadership, advocacy, and global health. Now, she’s channeling that same energy into building her career, advocating for the PA profession, and uplifting underserved communities.
Q&A with Mia:
Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to become a PA?
I come from a Puerto Rican family with deep roots in healthcare. My bisabuela was a Curandera, my tío a pharmacist, and my abuela a nurse. Their dedication to caring for others inspired me from an early age. When my family experienced a medical emergency during my childhood, I witnessed firsthand the impact PAs had on our care. Their knowledge, compassion, and teamwork left a lasting impression on me, and I knew I wanted to follow in both my family’s footsteps and the PA profession’s path of service, particularly in bringing quality healthcare to underserved communities.
How has life changed for you since becoming a PA-C? What has surprised you the most in this new stage?
Life has changed in the sense that I now carry both the privilege and responsibility of being directly involved in patient care. Transitioning from student to practicing provider has been incredibly rewarding, but also humbling. The biggest surprise for me has been how much growth happens outside of textbooks—through building relationships with patients, collaborating with colleagues, and adapting quickly in complex situations.
As someone of Puerto Rican descent, what are your thoughts on the current situation for PAs in Puerto Rico?
The PA profession in Puerto Rico is still in a very early stage, and there is so much potential for growth. I truly believe PAs could play a critical role in addressing healthcare shortages on the island, especially in rural and underserved areas. It’s exciting to see the beginnings of progress, but it’s clear that more advocacy, education, and awareness are needed to fully integrate PAs into the healthcare system.
How do you envision the future of the PA profession on the island, and what role do you hope to play in that growth?
I envision the PA profession becoming an essential part of the healthcare landscape in Puerto Rico, much like it is on the mainland U.S. My hope is to contribute to that growth by advocating for legislation, raising awareness, and eventually collaborating with local organizations to strengthen access to care. Long term, I would love to mentor students and new graduates on the island, helping to build a sustainable and respected PA workforce.
What advice would you offer to PA students or new graduates just beginning their careers?
Stay humble, stay curious, and never stop learning. No one expects you to know everything on day one. Lean on your mentors, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to admit when you need help. Keep close to the motivation that inspired you to begin this journey—it will carry you through the hardest moments. And don’t forget to care for yourself, because a balanced provider is the best provider for patients.
Outside of medicine, what passions, hobbies, or personal goals keep you balanced and inspired?
Spending time with family and friends keeps me grounded. Fall is my favorite season, so I love local festivals and haunted houses. I also enjoy walking my dogs, Harley and Azula. These outlets help me recharge and bring a fresh perspective to my work. I’ve also set personal goals around continuing to grow as a leader, which helps me reach my maximum potential in life.
